Description |
This green chasuble was worn by Father Damien De Veuster. It is in the Roman scapular form, with a shape often referred to as "fiddleback." The sleeveless liturgical vestment has a hole in the middle that allows it to be placed over the head and draped upon the shoulders of the wearer. This results in decorated panels falling to the front and back. The outer layer of this garment is made of silk and divided into three sections. A central panel contains embroidered designs in silk thread of rose bouquets and green vines over an underlying woven floral design. The two side panels show small bouquets of embroidered pink, white, and green flowers interspersed over a ribbed fabric. An inch-wide gold ribbon of silk brocade separates the sections and runs along the edge of the garment. The underside of the chasuble is lined with a solid green cotton fabric. An additional layer of linen fabric lies between the outer layer and lining. Derived from the casula planeta or paenula, an everyday outer garment worn during the late Roman Empire, the chasuble becomes a liturgical vestment reserved for the sacrifice of the Mass about the 11th century. Throughout the centuries, assorted styles of the chasuble have developed. The Roman scapular form has its origins in the 16th century. The chasuble is symbolic of the "yoke of Christ." http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=2849 http://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2006/07/on-origin-and-development-of-vestments.html http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Chasuble |
