Description |
This fabric remnant was part of a silk handkerchief given by Mother Marianne Cope, OSF, to Father Damien De Veuster, SS.CC. The decorative pattern resembles a band of ribbon and lace in black and tan. Father Damien used this handkerchief as a sling to support his crippled arm. After he died, the handkerchief was returned to Mother Marianne. The Fransciscan Sisters later divided it into smaller pieces, which they distributed as mementos of the saintly priest. This second-class relic is especially significant, as it it is associated with both saints of Hawaii - Saint Damien De Veuster and Saint Marianne Cope. |
