Description |
This hatchet has an iron blade attached to a wooden handle decorated with carved chevron designs. While the butt of the blade could act as a hammer, the cutting edge was used for light and rough wood cutting. "Goldenberg" is embossed on the blade. This identifies the Goldenberg Company of France as the manufacturer of this tool. An additional mark, illustrating a pair of eyes with eyelashes, indicates that the blade was made of Styrian steel. Father Damien De Veuster, and other Sacred Hearts priests and lay brothers, used this hand tool to build churches and other structures for the Catholic Mission in the Hawaiian Islands. |

Notes |
Fr. Joseph Bukoski III stated in 2012 that this carpentry tool was found in the attic of the former monastery of the Sacred Hearts Brothers at Kaneohe, Oahu. It was retrieved in 1970 after the Brothers had relocated to Our Lady of Bethany Seminary on the opposite ridge, and before demolition of the old monastery. At the time, Fr. Gaston Diels identified it as one of the tools used by Fr. Damien De Veuster and the Sacred Hearts Brothers for construction of churches and buildings throughout Hawaii. |
